After the Shari’a-for-peace deal, Islamist leader Maulana Sufi Muhammad has promised that the Taliban fighters in the Swat district of Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP) will be disarmed within a week.
According to a report in the Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Jasarat, Maulana Sufi Muhammad has arrived in the town of Mingora, the headquarters of the Swat district, to hold talks with his son-in-law Maulana Fazlullah, who leads the Taliban fighters.
Maulana Sufi Muhammad added: ‘‘We will all work together to establish peace. This is in the interest of all. The Taliban of Swat will be disarmed within a week. The Islamic Shari’a has been implemented; so there will be protection for everyone’s life and property, respect and dignity.’’
According to the report, Maulana Sufi Muhammad clarified that the Shari’a court system will be controlled by him, while the departments of economy, politics, culture, education and health will be under the control of the federal government.
