Police officials in the Indian capital of New Delhi have arrested Mohammad Omar Madni, a top aide of Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, according to an Indian website.
According to the website of The Times of India newspaper, Mohammad Omar Madni was arrested in the Qutub Minar area of south Delhi on Thursday evening.
The website quoted a senior police official as saying: ‘‘He [Mohammad Omar Madni] is a close aide of Hafiz Saeed and has been operating from Nepal from the past year.’’
Madni has been a close aide of Hafiz Saeed since 2000 and has been involved in ‘‘talent scouting’’ for Lashkar-e-Taiba, he said.
The police official disclosed that Madni had sent many youth to terror training camps in Pakistani Kashmir besides using the porous India-Nepal border to send his people into India.
According to the report, the police have recovered a Nepali citizenship card from Madni, who entered the northern Indian state of Bihar from the Nepalese border before reaching New Delhi.
It should be noted that Hafiz Muhammad Saeed, the head of Jamaatud Dawa, a charity arm of Lashkar-e-Taiba, was released from detention by a Pakistani court on Wednesday.
