Pakistani Intelligence Arrests Ex-Official For Links With Militants
Sayyed Muhammad Javed, the former commissioner of restive Malakand Division of North West Frontier Province (NWFP), has been detained for his alleged links with Taliban militants in the Swat district, according to an Urdu daily.
The NWFP’s Malakand Division includes the Swat district where the Pakistani Army has launched an army operation against the Taliban.
Javed was recently named in media reports for his role in the killing of some top Pakistan Army officers by the Taliban.
According to the report, Javed had close links with Maulana Fazlullah, the leader of Taliban militants in the Swat district, and Fazlullah’s father-in-law Maulana Sufi Muhammad, the chief of banned Islamist outfit Tahreek-e-Nifaz-e-Shariat-e-Muhammadi (TNSM).
According to a report in the Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Express, Javed was detained by personnel of Pakistani intelligence agencies and shifted to an undisclosed location for interrogation.
