Afghanistan’s Interior Minister Mohammad Hanif Atmar, during a visit to the southern Kandahar province, has called for disarming private militias or armed guards working for private security firms, according to an Afghan website.
Currently, there are thousands of illegal militias working with different private security companies of which many are not even registered with the government.
The minister added: ‘‘We respect the sacrifices of militias, but the way they work cannot be accepted. We should root them out.’’
