A three-member bench of Pakistan’s Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry has ordered that imported poultry feed that was found to contain traces of pork be destroyed within three weeks, according to an Urdu daily.
Pork is considered haram, or forbidden in Islam. Delivering the verdict on Tuesday, Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry (pictured above) remarked: ‘‘Pakistan is an Islamic nation. In an Islamic country, we cannot grant the permission to feed haram meat to people. It brings disgrace to the nation.’’
The Supreme Court ordered that higher officials of the customs department should monitor that no pork-contaminated food is imported into Pakistan. Justice Chaudhry added: ‘‘In future, if any company attempts to import such food, its license should be terminated.’’
Pakistan’s Attorney General Latif Khosa informed the court that more than 100 containers of pork-contaminated feed have been seized in Karachi and Lahore, having been imported from abroad.
According to the report, the Supreme Court was pleaded to allow that the feed be used as fertilizer by farmers, but the court ordered that it be either destroyed or sent to the countries from where it was imported.
