Ujjawal Nikam, the main prosecutor in the Mumbai terror attacks case, told a special court on Tuesday that ‘‘Pakistan’s security apparatus’’ was behind the planning and execution of the 2008 terror attacks, according to an Urdu-language daily.
India’s junior Interior Minister R. R. Patil was present at the court proceedings. Special Judge M. L. Tahliyani, who is hearing the Mumbai attacks case, is expected to deliver his judgment soon.
Pointing a direct finger at the Pakistani military, Nikam told the court that the Mumbai terror attacks were a rare example of ‘‘sponsored terrorism.’’
According to a report in the Urdu-language Roznama Inquilab, during his final arguments before the court, the government lawyer stressed the role played by one ‘‘Major General Sahib’’ named in a confessional statement by Ajmal Amir Kasab.
Kasab is the lone terrorist who was captured alive, while his nine team members died during the 2008 attacks.
Nikam informed that court that Lashkar-e-Taiba, the militant organization blamed for the attacks, ‘‘took pains to hide his [Major General Sahib’s] identity from the men who attacked Mumbai.”
