Jamaat-e-Islami Leader Opposes Secular Constitution For Pakistan

Sirajul Haq, the Deputy Emir of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, has said that his party will not allow the country’s rulers to secularize Pakistan’s constitution, according to an Urdu-language daily.

A strategy will soon be adopted by Jamaat-e-Islami, in consultation with political and religious parties, to counter the government’s moves to gradually eliminate Islamic articles from the constitution.

Referring to the ongoing drive against militancy in Pakistan, Sirajul Haq said, “The incompetent rulers have turned the country, especially the North West Frontier Province, into a slaughter house.”

Jamaat-e-Islami, which was once a close ally of the United States during the Soviet war in Afghanistan, is now a firm opponent of the U.S. war on terror and military operations against militants in Pakistan.
