Dr. Ishrat Hussain, the former Governor of the State Bank of Pakistan, has called for adopting an Islamic economic system in Pakistan in order to ensure the equitable distribution of resources and the eradication of poverty, according to an Urdu-language daily.
He made the statement while addressing a seminar organized to discuss the Islamic economic system and its prospects in Pakistan, according to a report in the Urdu-language daily Roznama Jang.
Hussain said, “Adoption of an Islamic economic system can remove a sense of deprivation and can bring stability to Pakistan, also by resolving the issues of terrorism and violence.”
Stating that the implementation of Islamic banking will help raise the living standards of the Pakistani people, he pointed out that in Pakistan a number of people stay away from banks because they involve dealing with ‘‘interests’’ which is forbidden in Islam.
