Vincent Desportes, head of France’s elite Inter-Forces Defense College, has said that the American strategy in Afghanistan is ‘‘not working’’ and that the situation there is at an all-time low, according to a Pakistani daily.
Desportes said that General Stanley McChrystal’s strategy in Afghanistan has failed to produce results, according to a report in The News daily.
He added: “The traditional counter-insurgency doctrine, as employed by McChrystal for a year, with restrained use of firepower, air and artillery attacks to reduce collateral damage, does not seem to be working.’’
According to the report, Desportes criticized U.S. President Barack Obama’s decision to deploy an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan, saying: “Everyone knows it has to be either zero or 100,000 soldiers... One does not fight half wars.”
