Islamist Leader: We Are Not Moderates, Extremists, Democrats Or Progressives

Pakistan’s top Islamist leader Maulana Sufi Muhammad, who was released from prison by the Pakistani government under a Shari’a-for-peace deal, has vowed to work for the implementation of Shari’a across the country.

The Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Mashriq quoted Sufi Muhammad as saying that after the implementation of Shari’a in the Malakand-Swat region of the North West Frontier Province as agreed under the deal, he will start the Shari’a movement in different parts of Pakistan.

According to the report, Sufi Muhammad rejected allegations that after the implementation of Shari’a in the Malakand-Swat region, it will become difficult for foreign tourists go there due to fears of the Taliban.

According to another report in the Urdu-language newspaper Roznama Jang, Sufi Muhammad said: ‘‘Peace and security are possible only through the implementation of Shari’a... We [Taliban] are not progressives, democrats, moderates or extremists; but [we are] those Muslims who have been discussed in the Koran and Sunnat.’’

About The MEMRI Blog

As a reader of MEMRI, you are familiar with our continuing efforts to expand our work to monitor more media outlets in more countries, research more subjects, and translate into more languages.

At this crucial time, as the war on terror continues, with the escalation of conflicts in the Middle East, and with reformists in the region needing help to make their voices heard, we are introducing The MEMRI Blog.

The MEMRI Blog is a new service, provided by The Middle East Media Research Institute, which will operate in conjunction with MEMRI.org, MEMRITV.org, and MEMRIFilms.org.

While MEMRI regularly provides translations from editorials and sermons, as well as expert analysis, The MEMRI Blog will specifically highlight brief NEWS ITEMS from Arabic, Persian, and Turkish language media sources.

Summaries are posted on the front page, but be sure to read the FULL ENTRY.
